What is landscape fabric? How to use?
Landscape fabric that is laid on the ground under mulch, in French drains, or on steep slopes. Landscape fabrics are used for a variety reasons; most commonly as a weed barrier, but also for soil separation, water filtration, slope stabilization, and erosion control. Landscape ground cover fabric prevents new weeds from growing, but it is not made to get rid of existing plants.
Landscape architects often work side by side with building architects, surveyors and engineers to design and plan projects like new subdivisions, public parks, college campuses, shopping centers, golf courses and industrial parks, and then produce detailed drawings to pull the projects together. They may specialize in a certain type of project, such as waterfront development, site construction, or environmental remediation (e.g., preserving wetlands). Landscape architects also play an important role in historic landscape preservation and restoration. This job includes some basic visioning and planning, removal of a fairly large tree (and stump), fence design/construction, construction of a garbage/recycling enclosure, landscaping and irrigation.
However, there're some challenges: There are safety concerns as we don't have anything blocking the backyard from the top of the garage; we have an old fireplace that we believe was part of an existing back house back in the day; there is an ugly, ugly fountain that we would like removed or hidden; there is a huge pergola structure that we would like removed; there is an ugly cement bunker looking space directly outside our backdoor that has steps leading up to the backyard that we would like transformed somehow, etc. So you're needed to be recommend a fabulous gardener and garden designer. She/he has strong horticultural skills and a lot of hands-on experience.
A quality landscape installation, especially an ecologically friendly landscape, may include the use of weed control fabric, but should always make good use of French drains, rain-gardens, retaining walls, and erosion control for steep slopes. Landscape fabrics, also including geo-textiles, are a key element for maximizing the longevity and effectiveness of quality landscaping.
The plants you use are left up to personal design aesthetics. Some prefer taller plants, while others like plants that spread along the ground. For more information please visit the weed mat suppliers.
